For the past two years, my good friend Christy (from Planes, Trains, and Running Shoes) and I started a virtual book club called Beyond Words. We have 62 members in our Goodreads group, and we have read some great books throughout the years. Some of the best books I’ve read, I’ve read because of the group. Homegoing, A Man Called Ove, Lilac Girls, All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, and The Pearl that Broke its Shell, are just a few books that I discovered through our book club that I love.
And while we have a monthly book and a monthly linkup, we haven’t had a lot of discussion about the books. Part of that is because Christy and I haven’t been too active. Part of that is that I forget to go on Goodreads because it’s not the best platform for discussions!
We don’t want to abandon our book club because we both think that it has the potential to be something really great. I love the idea of a bunch of bloggers reading the same book each month and then getting together via a linkup to talk about it.
So, Christy and I decided to move Beyond Words to Facebook. It’s our hope, that the more user-friendly interface will enable more discussion and offer more options for members to recommend books, not just for the monthly polls but to each other!
If your New Year’s Resolution is to read more, or you already read plenty but are looking for some good book discussions and recommendations, check out the brand new Beyond Words Facebook page!
For those of you who have been tried and true members, we’ll keep the Goodreads page going at least for a little while just in case there are some of you who aren’t on Facebook.
For those of you who are new and want to join us, here’s how things work:
I hope this new interface makes it a little bit easier for everyone to join! Our January pick is “Dear Fahrenheit 451: Love and Heartbreak in the Stacks: A Librarian’s Love Letters and Breakup Notes to the Books in Her Life by Annie Spence” and the February poll is live today! Check it out, vote for a book, and come back here on Friday, January 25 for our first link up of the new year!
If you have any questions or suggestions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
I love that y’all moved the discussion to Facebook! I think that it’ll make it a lot easier to discuss the books!
Yay! I think a move to FB is a great idea!
Hurrah! I just joined and I’m so excited to start reading with y’all. Reading more books is definitely one of my goals for 2018 and hopefully this will help me.
Great idea moving the book club to FB. I was able to link-up once in 2017 (The Handmaid’s Tale) but I’m definitely hoping to link-up more this year!!
This is such a cool idea!!! I love the idea of it being virtual.
