I opened my own Etsy shop! I’m selling handmade baby blankets. I’m so excited about it, and today I wanted to write about how my shop came to be.
When Nick was deployed, my friend taught me how to crochet. Making a blanket became my deployment project, which I talked about a lot on my blog. Whenever I felt lonely or anxious, I would start to crochet. It helped me get through deployment. As the blanket got bigger, I could see my progress – both toward finishing the blanket and towards ending deployment. I kept it for myself because I was so proud of it, and because it reminded me of deployment. It reminded me that I could get through hard things. Here’s that blanket:
I love handmade gifts and so I started making blankets, scarves, and hats to give away as gifts. I think all of my friends and family got a scarf that Christmas.
Of course, when I was pregnant, I made blankets for M. I had really no idea what kind of blanket I would end up using with M. After M was born, I definitely had my favorites, but I didn’t have one perfect blanket.
Once covid hit, I found myself crocheting yet again. I was having a hard time concentrating on reading, writing, or anything really. So I pulled out my crochet hook and started making blankets.
The first thing I made was a blanket for a friend who just had a baby. After thinking about my experience with M, I designed what I thought was the perfect baby blanket. I thought about everything from the size and stitch to the type of yearn used.
I made my friend a thick baby blanket, a large square that could be used for many purposes, like tummy time and monthly photos. It could be used as a cushion when baby starts to learn to sit up.
Afterwards, I started experimenting and made a smaller size blanket out of the same material. This one, I think, is perfect for the car seat, stroller, and newborn photos, and I think could become a perfect security blanket. It’s small enough that I can price it reasonably, so it’s a good gift for someone if you want to get them something nice that doesn’t cost a lot.
The name of my shop is Islann Co. Click here to check it out. If you’re looking for a baby gift I hope you’ll consider buying from my shop.
I won’t be posting a lot about my Etsy shop but I probably will mention it here and there. I’m really excited about it and thankful to have something creative and positive to focus on during these times.
Congrats on the shop! The blankets are beautiful!
Yay! Good for you for finding something creative 🙂 I actually have a friend and a relative who are both due in September so I’m going to check it out! Where did you get the name from?
You are SO dang talented! I’m so excited for you & your Etsy shop! These blankets are beautiful. I can’t wait to buy one for M!
