I don’t like New Year’s Resolutions.

New Year’s Day is a holiday! It’s one of the few holidays that Nick usually has off, and it’s usually filled with lots of family time. For me, January 1 is not the time to make a big life change. It’s time for eating leftover pie with my family, experimenting with hot chocolate recipes, and stretching the holidays to last as long as possible. It’s not the day for me to start a diet or think about getting organized. It’s not going to happen for me.

Spring is a whole different story. New Year’s Day feels like a sharp, forced, beginning, when in reality, nothing has really changed. Spring emerges slowly. Spring is a welcome reprive from the harshness of winter. Spring is a signal from nature to get out of your house and make a change. Spring is different.

Spring brings different weather. It’s warmer. You can feel the sunshine on your back.
Spring feels different. You can go outside without a hat, gloves, scarves, boots, and your heaviest coat. The days are longer.
Spring looks different. The snow melts. Flowers bloom. Trees turn green.
Spring even smells different. You can open up your windows and let the fresh air in.

Spring it all about change.

Spring is the time for new beginnings. Spring is the time to change whatever it is about your life that is holding you back. Spring is the time to try something you’ve never tried before. Spring is the time to take a risk.

Spring is here. Right now is the perfect time to embrace change. Right now is the perfect time to reevaluate your New Year’s Resolutions. Right now is the perfect time to apply for that dream job. Right now is the perfect time to hit the gym and start eating healthier. Right now is the perfect time to clean out your closets. Right now is the perfect time to take a spontaneous road tip. Right now is the perfect time to chase your dreams.

  1. It really is true that Spring just naturally makes it easier to start something new. The Winter is always so depressing and when you fail at your New Years Resolution, I think that it hits you especially hard during the winter!

Yes, and I think it’s even harder to make big life changes in the middle of winter. Like who wants to start going to the gym when it’s freezing out? I can barely get myself to go outside for the things I have to do when it’s so cold, let alone start doing something new! I finally got back to the gym in March!

I definitely feel that my mood improves when the weather gets warmer. I should get better about using the momentum to accomplish some goals!

    • Carolann says:

Do it Sara! I need to ride that momentum too! It’s finally getting to be so nice out and I feel like I have all of this extra energy.

I agree with your new years resolution! It was on point. NYE is about family and festivities. Spring is definetly a more practical time of the year to make chances, it is way more practical than in winter when everything is covered in snow and the days are shorter! Great post Carolann 🙂

    • Carolann says:

Thanks Isabel. I really feel like I have more time to get things done now that the days are longer. I think it’s making me more productive. Am I crazy?!

    This is so, so true!

Thanks, Emma! After living in Hawaii for two years I think I have a new take on and appreciation for the seasons!!
