Hi from California! We moved out of our house in Connecticut, so we are officially nomads. Nick and I are here in California for about 10 days visiting family and friends before going to see more friends, going to Harry Potter World, and going to New York.
What’s your favorite band? The band that speaks to your soul and you feel like you would totally be best friends with in real life?
For me, it’s Flight of the Conchords.
I love Fight of the Conchords because they are not your typical band. They are a comedy band — their songs are quirky, ridiculous, and hilarious. They refer to themselves as “the almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand.”
Their songs are about everything from breakups to the day that the robots take over. I love the way they look at things in new and unusual ways. At the same time, I think that they speak to universal experiences. The songs are hilarious but it really is their personalities and their chemistry together that makes them so awesome.
The band’s two members, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, are two incredibly talented humans and definitely are my long lost best friends. They are both from New Zealand, and they are responsible for my love affair with all things New Zealand.
They had a show on HBO, also called Flight of the Conchords. It aired for two seasons and was about a fictionalized version of themselves trying to make it in NYC. Every episode featured their music.
My love for Jemaine only grew after I got to meet him in Hawaii (you can read about that awesome experience here!).
Flight of the Conchords hasn’t toured in a long time. I wanted to get tickets the day that they announced their 2016 tour, but I had no idea what was happening this summer with moving so I couldn’t buy tickets. After we made our plans for visiting family and moving to Hawaii, I looked through their tour dates and saw that we would be in California the same day as the show.
Dreams do come true.
We got $30 tickets so we could sit on the lawn in the back. We got there early to get a good spot – in the center, kind of higher up. We brought a picnic, got a couple of beers, and lay down on towels on the grass. I snapped this photo while we were waiting for the show to start.
To give you an idea of the type of band they are, the show didn’t open up with other musicians. Three different comedians came on before Flight of the Conchords.
As the sun went down and Flight of the Conchords came on stage, I looked up and saw that it was the clearest night I had seen in a long time. I watched a shooting star go by and knew it was going to be a perfect night.
What I love about their shows is that Bret and Jemaine always talk a bit in between songs. They played some new songs and some old ones and everyone went crazy when they played some of their old favorites.
I was laughing so hard during one of their new songs that I didn’t think I could take any more. They were so great to see live and I am so thankful Nick and I got to experience it.
It was one of those nights where you are so completely in the moment, where you feel the breeze and the vastness of the stars and you probably don’t even know where your phone is.
Nights like these are good for your soul.
What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
