Mount Olympus has been the elusive trail that I never could quite get to. Nick and I tried to hike it when we first moved here 3 years ago and ended up on a completely different trail. Then I tried to do it with my friend a few months ago. She had already done it, so I knew we wouldn’t get lost. But her car broke down on the way to the trail so we called it a day.

So I wondered if maybe the gods up on Mount Olympus didn’t want me up there. But I decided to give it one last try during my friend’s last week in Hawaii. Because without her, I’m not sure I could have found the trail!

So it turns out, the trail is not that hard to find after all. There is a park with a bathroom.

And plenty of chickens. If you’ve seen Moana, this picture should make the movie make more sense now. Chickens everywhere. Even up on a mountain.

The trail was a good mix of up and down. Going uphill for a long time wears me out, so I liked this trail because you got to break it up.

Another thing I loved about this trail was that you got lots of awesome teaser views on the way up. That’s Diamond Head in the far left and Honolulu on the right.

More views as we went higher and higher.

Almost there! I love when there are ropes because it makes it so much easier.

3 miles later, we reached the top. You could see so much of the island! Diamond Head in Honolulu, the Mokes in the windward side, and even little Rabbit Island on the eastern side.

The views were incredible! We hung out at the top for a while before making our way down. This hike was definitely a challenge but not unreasonable.

Tips for hiking Mount Olympus:
– Bring snacks, lots of water, and sunscreen. It’s a long 6 miles.
– It took me about 6 hours, including hanging out at the top of the mountain for a bit. Plan for a long day.
– Experienced hikers only.
– This mountain is a cloud magnet. We got really lucky with such a clear day! So be prepared.

This hike looks super intense – especially the rope part! And the chickens – omg!!! I love your hiking posts, the photos are so beautiful and they really make me want to come to Hawaii, or at least get out of my bed and go hiking here in England aha.

Totally swooning over those views from the top– I love how lush and green everything is with the blue of the water. So glad you were finally able to make it to the trail, the hills being up and down does sound nicer than having it all up hill, but that rope part looks so intense!

  5. Mount Olympus looks so incredibly beautiful, and you’re right the views are amazing! That’s awesome that they have ropes for people to use when they’re hiking as well. So we still haven’t seen Moana, but I remember the chicken from the previews and I loved that they included that in the movie! It’s so totally Hawaii!
