Thank you Amanda, The Lady Okie, for being so generous with your blog post ideas!

I’m not one to get into Valentine’s Day, but this week got me feeling all of the feels about Nick and our life together:

1. When you met: June 2007

2. How did you meet? One of my friends invited me out with some of her friends to the movies and TGI Fridays. I was not in the mood for going out, I had sworn off dating for a while, and I had already seen the movie – Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. But my friend told me about this guy Nick that was coming and I was curious to meet him. Plus, I love everything related to Pirates of the Caribbean. So even though wasn’t in the mood, I felt a pull to go out that night.

When Nick’s hair gets long, it sticks straight up. I instantly noticed Nick’s long red hair as we all were going into the movie. It was the summer and his only job at the time in the Navy was to go to college, so I guess he was being lazy about cutting it.

However, Nick didn’t even notice that I was in the group until everyone sat down to eat dinner at the restaurant after the movie. Way to make a girl feel special. We sat next to each other, so we ended up talking a lot that night.

3. First date: July 28, 2007. The only way I remember that is because I sent my friend an email with every single detail as soon as I got home, so I was able to check later. Nick picked me up at my parents’ house and came inside to shake my dad’s hand. Then we went to dinner and a movie. Years later we both admitted that we wanted to go to the movies for our first date because we were nervous and shy and you don’t have to talk during movies. But as it turned out, we had plenty to talk about, because we ended up talking until 4 in the morning in my parents’ house.

4. Date you got engaged: December 26, 2011 (full story here!)

5. Marriage anniversary: August 23, 2013

6. What is “your song”? We didn’t have a song until our wedding. I was so stressed with wedding stuff that I just asked Nick to pick a song for our first dance. I didn’t even care what it was. When he told me he wanted to use Crazy Love by Van Morrison, I listened to the song and just about died. Now it’s our song.

7. Do you remember the first movie you saw together? Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, on the night we met!

8. First road trip together? One year after we started dating, we took a road trip through California. First we went to Disneyland, then we drove to Yosemite National Park, and finally we drove up to spend some time with Nick’s family. It was a 2-week long trip and for many years that was the longest amount of time we had ever spent together.

Also, see what I mean about Nick’s vacation hair 🙂

9. Who was interested first? I was interested in Nick because I had heard all of these awesome stories about him. Everyone in his group of friends just loved him and had so much respect for him. Later, I met his friends from high school and realized they all had the same kinds of stories and love for him. Anyway, I could tell that he was a genuine, good guy – the strong and silent type. I wanted to get to know him, but I was awkward. He was interested in me because he says I seemed “different.” That’s all he says about it. Typical Nick.

After that first night at the movies, we were both interested in getting to know each other but we were both so shy. After a couple of months of only seeing each other when our big group of friends would hang out, Nick asked me out on a date by sending me a message on MySpace. Yup.

The first time he asked me out, I was busy with something with my family that night so I couldn’t go. I was worried he would think I was lying, because I really did want to go on a date with him. Later he told me he decided to ask one more time and he would have left me alone if I said no a second time. I like that he didn’t want to badger me. But good thing I was free the second time!

10. Who said I love you first? Nick did. We were sitting in my car as he was dropping me off back to my college dorm. We had this long, intense conversation. At the end of it he said I love you, and I said it too. We fell hard and fast.

Amanda encouraged everyone on her blog post to answer the questions, so I will also encourage you to comment with your answers to these questions or make your own post! This was fun.

I know right?! When he told me that years later I was so glad I said yes that second time! Haha. I guess I could have always asked him out but I was too shy!

I love this story so much!!! You guys are wonderful together and can I just tell you how much I love that wedding photo! So beautiful!

  3. Audrey says:

I love this little peak into your love story!! Our dates are similar- at least the years: dated in 07, engaged in 11, married in 13. We met in 05, though. It took us a while to date. Lol
I copy&pasted my answers from her comment section 😉

    10. “I love you” first: Him. At a Fallout Boy Concert

Oh my gosh, that is too funny about our similar dates. 07, 11, and 13 were clearly awesome years. People used to ask what took us so long to get engaged, but we were so young! We weren’t really in a rush. I love that you met in high school band!

      • Audrey says:

Hahaha, I totally forgot about that. When we told people we were engaged most of them responded with, “Well it’s about time!”
        I was like,”Umm… I’m only 21! What’s that supposed to mean?! Lol.”

  4. I love this, and I definitely want to try and answer these questions too! Mine and Chris’s first date was actually a movie too, and he asked for my number on Facebook. Oh to be living in the technological age, right!

    • Carolann says:

How else are you supposed to get someone’s number these days?! This was such a fun post, you definitely should do it!

  5. Carly says:

This was so fun to read– you take such great photos together, you can tell how happy you guys are & forever swooning over your wedding pictures! I love that you stayed up so late talking after your first date.

    • Carolann says:

Aw thank you!!! Looking back it must have been a sign that we were meant to be, especially since we tried to pick a date activity where we wouldn’t have to talk too much because we were both so shy!!

  6. Amanda says:

    Bahaha! Vacation hair 🙂
Anniversary twins! This was fun to read. I’m glad you weren’t busy that second time.

    • Carolann says:

Oh gosh, me too! I didn’t know Nick had such strict rules in place for dating!
I have come to love that long hair now because it means that Nick is off from work! Even better is when he grows out his beard when he’s on vacation. I love that beard & wish the military would let him keep it!
Thanks for the post idea. It was so much fun to look back on our early days together and write about it. I don’t think I’ve ever shared all that on my blog before.

  7. Sarah CC says:

Omg Carolann.. MYSPACE!! I actually laughed out loud at that point. Did he then put you in his top 8?? This is such a cute post, it was nice to read a bit more about how you met each other 🙂
Dan & I met when I studied abroad in England during my junior year of college. He was friends with a lot of my housemates and neighbors so would come play video games at my house on occasion. Apparently he noticed me first, going to grab things in the kitchen, but I didn’t notice him as he blended in with the giant group of boys that were always crowded around our TV. Then one night around Halloween, my housemate Henry dragged me out to a houseparty with him. My other housemate Amanda was sick so I ended up at this party that was 80% college guys, only knowing one person. Well, Dan and I started talking after Henry introduced us, but Henry promptly disappeared to go find a girl he liked, leaving me stuck with Dan for the rest of the night. And the rest is history!

I honestly can’t remember, but I feel like Nick was the kind of guy who was too cool to make or update his Top 8!! I swear he had an album on Myspace dedicated to all pictures of the two of us at one point. And he used to write me the sweetest messages on there. I went back and screenshotted them a few years ago. Yet now he hates all social media. I loved reading the story of how you and Dan met!! Of course he noticed you in that big group:) Good thing you went to that party and got “stuck” with him!

  8. Rachel G says:

Awwww! I love this. Great to get to know a little bit more of how you guys started out! It’s always awkward at the beginning, isn’t it? That California Roadtrip sounds amazing!

    • Carolann says:

Thank you! I love hearing everyone’s love stories so I thought it was time to write mine! I remember feeling so awkward when we first started dating. I actually remember thinking to myself, “I really hope that Nick is the one because dating is so awkward.”

Your post about your upcoming trip to California got me all nostalgic for that trip. You’re going to have so much fun in Disney. I loved it so much there.

  9. Julie says:

Love posts like this – I’m a sucker for a good “how we met/love story” type post! My story is still unfolding, so… 😉 Fingers crossed!!

But yep, we met on an app, so not quite myspace but haha

  10. Lovely! It’s always so interesting to find out more about other people and their relationships. I’m so nosy 🙂
And that wedding picture is stunning!

    • Carolann says:

Oh I am too! I love reading people’s love stories so when I saw Amanda’s post I knew it was time to write my own. And thank you — I have this picture hanging above our bed and I just love it.
